Bruce Rider of Harrisville, a member of Grove City Lodge 603, Free and Accepted Masons, received the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award for his many contributions to the Boy Scouts of America.

Wayne Frankenstein of Zelienople, District Deputy Grand Master for the 26th Masonic District, congratulated Rider for being an exemplary representative of Freemasonry and the Boy Scouts of America.

Bradley Parola, Grove City, master of Grove City Lodge No. 603, also lauded Rider for his years of dedicated support of the values of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Award supports the Masonic relationship through the person who brought Scouting to America and proclaims the integrity of the recipient.

Beth Herold, administrator of the Butler County Area Agency on Aging, has been appointed by Gov. Tom Corbett to the Pennsylvania Alzheimer’s Disease State Planning Committee.

The 17-member committee will develop a plan to address the growth of Alzheimer’s disease in the state. After gathering regional input, the committee will submit a final report to the governor early next year.

Megan Lawther McCarthy, formerly of Adams Township and a 1998 graduate of Mars High School, received the 2013 Distinguished Staff Award at Ohio State University.

McCarthy, now of Columbus, Ohio, earned her bachelor’s from Indiana (Pa.) University in 2003 and her master’s from Ohio State in 2005 in African American and African Studies.

She served in Ohio State’s office of international affairs as an immigration coordinator for the university’s 6,000 plus international students. She has since accepted a position as program manager for student engagement within the office of international affairs. McCarthy’s in-depth knowledge of United States immigration laws and her capabilities as an advocate, teacher, mentor, problem-solver, ambassador and friend to students and colleagues were recognized with the award.

On June 20, the Butler Duplicate Bridge Club winners were: First — Alan Martin and Ray Kramer in a tie with Bob Freemon and Nick Tredennick.
