HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's state budget makers are getting better news about the spending plan they're trying to assemble. The state Legislature's fiscal analysts said Monday that they're estimating state tax collections this year and next will be just $220 million behind where Gov. Tom Corbett projected them in February.

That's a $300 million improvement from the $520 million revenue gap the Independent Fiscal Office identified in its May 1 estimate. The IFO is projecting tax collections will grow 3.8 percent in this fiscal year and by 1.2 percent in the fiscal year beginning July 1.

SOMERSET — State police are searching for a vandal who threw a large rock through an original stained-glass window at a 19th century church.Police think the window was broken Saturday at the 168-year-old Christ Casebeer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, near Somerset.Pastor Dennis Doebler believes the stained glass is insured for more than $1 million, but doubts it can be replaced or restored. Police say the rock was a was thrown through a clear, exterior window but also broke the stained glass.
