PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have put left-hander Wandy Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list because of tightness in his forearm.
Rodriguez left his previous start in the first inning last Wednesday at Atlanta with the injury. He was scheduled to throw off a mound Monday, but that session was canceled after he still felt discomfort from playing catch a day earlier.
Rodriguez is 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 12 starts this season.
Pederson receives extension from PittPITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through 2018.Pittsburgh chancellor Mark Nordenberg called the deal a tribute to the hard work of Pederson, who spearheaded the school’s move from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt officially joins the ACC on July 1.Nordenberg called Pederson “the driving force” of the transition, adding the school has “never been better positioned for future success.”Pederson, who begins his 13th year at Pitt this summer, said he is “fortunate” to continue with the Panthers.
NHL ratings doublein conference finalsNEW YORK — The NHL conference finals’ television viewership more than doubled from last year.With three large-market teams and three clubs with recent histories of luring audiences, the Blackhawks-Kings and Bruins-Penguins series averaged 2.65 million viewers on NBC and NBC Sports Network despite lasting only a combined nine games. Kings-Coyotes and Devils-Rangers averaged 1.25 million viewers last year over 11 games.Helped by two double-overtime games, this year’s series drew the most viewers for a conference finals in 17 years.
Bobcats add Ewing to coaching staffCHARLOTTE, N.C. — A person familiar with the situation says the Charlotte Bobcats have reached an agreement in principle with Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing to become their new associate head coach.The 50-year-old Ewing was a teammate of Bobcats owner Michael Jordan on the 1992 USA Olympic “Dream Team” that won gold at the Barcelona Games.Ewing also spent five years as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic working alongside Steve Clifford, who was hired as the Bobcats head coach last month.
Blaylock’s bond set at $250KJONESBORO, Ga. — A Georgia judge has set bond at $250,000 for an ex-NBA player accused in a fatal suburban Atlanta car crash.Daron “Mookie” Blaylock appeared in court Tuesday on charges of vehicular homicide, driving on a suspended license, making an improper lane change and crossing the median in the head-on crash from May 31.
