Rally not enough for Bears Semi-pro grid team falls 26-20

Butler County Bears running back and Moniteau graduate James Shope breaks a tackle on the way to some positive yardage at Moniteau High School Saturday evening. A late rally fell short as the Bears fell to the Colts 26-20.

CHERRY TWP — A fourth-quarter comeback from the Butler County Bears fell short in a 26-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Colts on Saturday night in Ohio Football League action at Moniteau High School.

The Butler County offense failed to gain traction throughout the first three quarters, committing five turnovers including two lost fumbles on the first two offensive snaps of the second half. However, Harry Burke, Vince Papley and Stephon Conto intercepted passes to keep the Bears within striking distance.

The Bears trailed the Colts 12-0 entering the final quarter and the deficit grew to 20-0 early in the fourth.

Butler County rebounded with 20 consecutive points to knot the game with a little over three minutes remaining, but the Colts returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and held on for victory.

It marked the first defeat of the season for the Bears (3-1), while Pittsburgh improved to 2-2.

Butler County will travel to play the undefeated Greensburg Panthers on Saturday and return home Saturday, June 22 for U.S. Veterans Night at Moniteau High School to take on the Western Reserve Scourge at 7 p.m.
