Kinsella enjoys new day

Gentry Kinsella had a forgettable day on Tuesday.

The Slippery Rock second baseman committed three errors and was replaced after just one at-bat.

Things were much better for Kinsella Wednesday.

Kinsella went 2-for-4 at the plate and had 11 assists and two putouts at second base — including three spectacular plays — to help the Sliders to a 4-2 win over Butler in Prospect League baseball action at Pullman Park.

“He’s a good little player,” said Slippery Rock manager Brett Neffendorf. “He just had a little bit of a rough start. He had a long layoff — about a month. He stepped it up tonight and took care of the baseball.”

Kinsella, who played at Chandler Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Ariz., showed off his range, getting to balls seemingly headed for center field and corralling others that looked destined for right field.

“He had a very, very outstanding day defensively,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski.

So did Slippery Rock pitchers David Wilson and Kevin Becker-Menditto.

Wilson gave up just one run on three hits in six innings of work for the win. Wilson has all three victories for the Sliders this season.

Becker-Menditto, a submarine-style pitcher, worked the final 2 2/3 innings for his first save.

Becker-Menditto was 6-1 and gave up just one earned run in 31 2/3 innings pitched this spring for Alvernia College.

“He can go dang near every day,” Neffendorf said. “He gives you a different look than the guys you put out there before him. He doesn’t walk anybody, and from that (arm) slot, you are going to get a lot of balls on the ground.”

Slippery Rock (3-4) got 19 ground ball outs in the game as Butler (4-4) managed just six singles.

BlueSox starter GJ Senchak also pitched well. The left-hander gave up just two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

He was victimized by two errors that helped Slippery Rock score a pair of runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings.

Dan Hurlimann had a RBI double in the fourth and Casey Roche a run-scoring triple in the sixth.

Pitching and defense, though, will determine how far the Sliders can go this season.

“I think we’re going to be offensive enough,” Neffendorf said. “If we can get our pitchers going and play good defense, I think we’re going to be OK.”

Rebyanski thinks his team is going to be just fine, too.

“Tonight was not the outcome we wanted,” Rebyanski said. “But I can’t knock anything these guys are doing. They are playing their hearts out every day.”

Notes: The BlueSox wore pink sox for breast cancer awareness. ... Grove City High graduate and Butler left-fielder Alex Miklos arrived with the game ball in a Bell-47D1 helicopter. ... Miklos left the game with a jammed thumb. ... Slippery Rock leadoff batter Trey Rogers had his bat deemed illegal. League rules require a one solid piece bat. His was a two-piece composite. Rebyanski said he noticed the bat was illegal Tuesday night, but nothing was done. When he saw it again Wednesday, he challenged it. “I’m not here to get guys fined and get guys thrown out and I’m not saying that they are cheating,” Rebyanski said. “But the league says one solid piece bat. I’m not trying to create enemies.”
