SRU track 2nd at PSAC meet
The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team won five events and set a school record at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, but fell 4.5 points shy of a conference title, losing out to Shippensburg.
The meet came down to the final event, with Shippensburg edging The Rock 178-173.5. It was the fifth straight PSAC championship for Shippensburg.
Shippensburg won the 1,600-meter relay while SRU placed fifth. That was the five-point swing that gave the Raiders the title.
Cameron Daugherty needed just one vault to defend his title in the pole vault. He passed on every height cleared by his opponents and vaulted 5.06 meters on his one and only attempt to win.
Zachary Wisneski surprised the field to win the discus with a throw of 47.36 meters.
The Rock's 400-meter relay team of Hans Lubich, Seneca Valley grad Hunter Williams, Butler grad Mason McLaughlin and D.J. Chison set a school record in the finals to win the event with a time of 40.92 seconds. The relay team originally broke the record, which stood since 1979, in the prelims and then broke it again in the finals.
Jonathan Boyd and Slippery Rock grad Ethan Geisler finished 1-2 respectively in the 110-meter hurdles for The Rock.
Boyd's winning time was 14.52 seconds. Geisler came in at 14.81.
Kevin Jewell dominated the 800-meter run, placing first with a time of 1 minute, 50.93 seconds.
Lexi Arnold won her third career PSAC title with a throw of 44.80 meters as the SRU women’s track and field team placed fourth at the conference championships.Sam Taylor was third in the javelin for The Rock and earned All-PSAC honors.Mariah Burns was the only other Slippery Rock female to earn All-PSAC Saturday with a third-place finish in the triple jump at 11.47 meters.
