ERIE — A man shot a northwestern Pennsylvania teacher’s aide in the head outside an elementary school Friday, prompting the building to be locked down after the woman ran inside to take refuge, officials said.

Students at McKinley Elementary School in Erie were released early following the shooting Friday morning. Erie police identified the suspected shooter as Derrick L. Rowry.

Rowry, 46, is facing attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and other charges. Police said he shot 44-year-old Tamara Logan “multiple times in the head area.”

Logan was taken to UPMC Hamot after the shooting. She is awake and alert, police said.
