Betty Jo Smith

Betty Jo Smith of Butler was named Alumni Nurse of the Year by Butler Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni.

A graduate of Butler High School, Smith graduated in 1955 from Butler Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

She worked at Butler Memorial Hospital, the Butler VA Hospital and retired from the VNA. With the alumni, Smith assisted with the banquet committee and many fundraisers.

A mother of four and grandmother of seven, she resides in Center Township with her husband, William.

New officers for the nurses alumni include president Linda Cunningham; vice president, Elaine Gaiser; secretary, Jean Morrow; and treasurer, Doris Morgan. Shirley Fox continues as chaplain.

Butler Township was honored as a Banner Community. For 2013, it is one of only 21 communities to receive this recognition from the Allegheny League of Municipalities.

To be eligible for the award, officials must achieve certain criteria including participating in educational and training programs, organizing a Government Week activity, participating in a school program and offering a newsletter or website for communication.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County was the recipient of $31,000 following the 19th annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake. More than 45 local corporate sponsors, nearly 200 bowlers, and numerous volunteers participated.

On May 2, the Butler Duplicate Bridge Club winners were:

First: Bob Freemon and Dave Ruppert

Second: Lorraine Worsley and Ray Kramer.
