Drug abuse workshop scheduled

SAXONBURG — The Southeast Butler County Community Alliance is hosting a Prescription Drug Abuse Community Workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. May 30 in the social hall of the Saxonburg Memorial Church at 100 E. Main St.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger, Sheriff Mike Slupe, Dr. Sophie Hanna of the Good Samaritan Pain Clinic and pharmacist Ethan Schwarz of Colonial Pharmacy will speak.

Topics at the free workshop will include the illegal use of prescription drugs, drug diversion and the links between prescription drugs and street drugs.

In addition to the presentations, Saxonburg police officer Kevin Stiles will accept prescription drugs as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration drug takeback program to rid homes of potentially dangerous medication.

Although the service is free and anonymous, drugs will only be accepted from individuals, not from hospitals, doctor’s offices or clinics. No chemotherapy drugs, biological drugs, needles or other sharp objects will be accepted.
