Dr. Marjorie King

Dr. Marjorie King, 80, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away Friday at her home.

Dr. King was born Jan. 14, 1933, in Pittsburgh to the late Edwin Leon Shannon and Eleanor Lois Garner.

Dr. King graduated from West Sunbury High School in 1950 and Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, earning a diploma in nursing. She continued her education at Duquesne University, graduating in 1970 with a bachelor of science in nursing. In 1975, she graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a MNEd., and in 1998, she graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Doctor in Education.

Dr. King worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than 30 years in numerous management and leadership positions. Her last position was chief, nursing service at the VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. She kept her fingers on the pulse of her service with tireless rounds throughout the hospital on all shifts. She was dedicated to her staff and willing to labor on their behalf. Dr. King retired from the VA in 1993.

In the fall of 1993, Dr. King began her teaching career in the College of Nursing, East Tennessee State University. She taught leadership and management courses in the bachelors of science in nursing programs. She also taught in a multidisciplinary course in the masters program. Research and presentations were focused on critical thinking, entry-level competencies needed for bachelors of science in nursing, preceptor orientation, portfolio building and the senior practicum and partnership practicum. Throughout her teaching career, getting to know her students was a top priority.

Dr. King received numerous commendations and awards during her lengthy nursing career. These included The United Tennessee Veterans Association 1990 Award in Administration, The College of Education, ETSU Outstanding Dissertation Award for 1998; The ETSU Adult Education award in 1997; TNA Council on Nursing Administration (a state award) 1995; College of Nursing Teaching Award in 2002; Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Nursing in 1999 and 2004; and TNA District V Outstanding Member Award in 2004.

She held National Certification in Nursing Administration Advance since 1982.

In addition, Dr. King held numerous leadership positions in multiple community and professional organizations during her professional career. These included the Combined Federal Campaign, United Way, American Cancer Society, TNA and Sigma Theta Tau.

Dr. King was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. She was a member of the adult choir.

Dr. King is survived by her two sons, Mark Danoff at home and Jeff and Paula Danoff of Winnetka, Ill.; two daughters, Victoria Young of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Leslie and Danny Elkins of Roswell, Ga.; and two grandsons and one step-grandson.

Being a mother and grandmother to her family was her greatest joy in life. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie Shannon, Parkersburg, W.Va., three nieces and three nephews-in-law.

KING — A graveside and committal service for Dr. Marjorie King, who passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City, Tenn., with the Rev. Louis Imsande officiating.
