Yellow fever
BUFFALO TWP — Losing a dual meet rarely happens for the Freeport girls track and field team.
In fact, since the beginning of the 2011 season, it hasn't happened at all.
The Yellowjackets qualified for their fourth straight WPIAL Class AA team final, defeating Quaker Valley (98-53), Freedom (121-29) and Trinity Christian (128-21) in Wednesday's semifinal at Freeport High School.
Freeport's boys failed to advance, defeating Fort Cherry (106-44) and Trinity Christian (94-56), but losing to Freedom (86-64).
The Yellowjacket girls lost to South Park in the 2010 finals, but have not been defeated since.
“The tradition was started long ago,” said Freeport coach John Gaillot. “The current staff just wants to keep it going.”
For seniors like Rachael Kubeldis, a victory in next Thursday's final would mean closing their careers on an incredible winning streak.
“It would mean everything,” said Kubeldis, who was on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams Wednesday. “We haven't lost since the last meet of my freshman year. I would love that.”
A contributing factor to Freeport's success is the attitude the girls carry into every meet.
“Everybody does their job,” said Gaillot. “Our girls are tough and competitive. They don't like to lose.
“If we can win next week, that would be three straight (WPIAL) titles,” he added. “I don't believe any Freeport team, boys or girls, has ever done that. The girls should be geared up for it.”
Joining Kubeldis in the 3,200 relay win was Becca Dudek, Brittney Bianco and Nicole Miller.
She teamed with Ashley Sample, Grace Ward and Bianco to win the 1,600 event.
Junior Michaela Bowser picked up one of Freeport's four overall individual wins Wednesday with her effort of 15 feet, six inches in the long jump. Her goals this month not only involve team success, but individual feats as well.
“I feel like I'm where I need to be in the long jump, but would like to improve in the triple,” she said. “My best is 32-10, but I would like to reach 33 feet by the end of the season.”
Also winning for Freeport was Grace Ward (300 hurdles), Macy Smolic (shot put) and Taylor Hochbein (discus).
Freeport's boys team saw its campaign come to an end, but the Yellowjackets turned in their usual dominant regular season, winning the Section 7-AA title with a perfect 7-0 record.
“We had a lot of young kids on last year's team and I saw drastic improvement this season,” said Gaillot.
The Yellowjackets did defeat all three of their opponents in Wednesday's 4x100 relay (Mike Teorsky, Travis Hall, Ethan Morrison and Brendan Lynch) and the 4x400 event (Josh Brestensky, Teorsky, Hall and Lynch).
Cole Hepler proved dominant in the javelin (156-2) and Alec Stivers won the pole vault (13-0).
But Freedom tallied 12 first-place efforts against the Yellowjackets, advancing the Bulldogs to next week's final. They also beat Trinity Christian 92 1/3-56 2/3 and Fort Cherry 102-47.
“We knew Freedom was good,” said Gaillot, “but were hoping for a closer meet.”
