Mars names new librarian
MARS — The new librarian at the Mars Public Library brings a wealth of experience plus regional knowledge to her position.
Jolene Thompson, who began her employment on April 1, was coordinator of online and patron services for six years at the Zelienople Public Library before coming to Mars.
She replaces Mary Jo Simons, who was the Mars librarian for just more than three years before leaving to pursue other opportunities.
Thompson praised Simons' efforts in instituting programs.
“I hope to continue the previous director's work and to grow the library and make it a community place where people enjoy lifelong learning,” Thompson said.
She called America's public libraries important community learning centers and meeting places where a plethora of new information is available at no cost.
Thompson said the Mars library's strength is its helpful, knowledgeable staff, who enjoy assisting people meet their needs at the library.
Nancy Tenney, who is on the library board of directors, said the board appreciated Thompson's work with the public while employed at the Zelienople library, plus her knowledge of the Butler County Federated Library System.
“She has a lot of enthusiasm and really wants to do a good job,” Tenney said. “She fit right in with the person in charge of the federated library system and the other library directors because she already knew them. That was a big advantage.”
Thompson graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in library science. She lives in Zelienople with her husband, Brian, and daughter, Natalie.
Tenney said, “We look forward to her being a great asset at the library.”
The Mars library is at 107 Grand Ave. Information on its programs and materials is available at www.bcfls.org/mars-area-public-library.
