CRANBERRY TWP — Kathy Havey and Dr. Paul Havey take their pets everywhere.

Most recently, that meant a two-week family vacation in Florida.

So, it's fitting that their 14½-year-old golden retriever Cody Bear was chosen to be represented on the cover of the 15th edition of Traveling With Your Pet: The AAA PetBook released this month.

Cody's photo was chosen AAA PetBook Photo Contest winner sponsored by Best Western. The winning photograph features Cody Bear relaxing at Seven Springs Resort, where he and his canine sister Ginger can run to their heart's content.

“Cody Bear is part of our family,” said Kathy Havey. “We wouldn't dream of leaving him home. He's special to us and goes everywhere. He's our cross-country boy.”

The Haveys do a lot of traveling in their RV with Cody Bear, his 7-year-old sister Ginger and their 8-year-old cat Lucy.

“They all go with us. They're very good animals,” she said.

Her husband, Paul, has a dentistry practice in Slippery Rock.

“Cody Bear loves ice cream and golf cart rides,” said Kathy Havey. In the past, her special dog has taken part in the Cranberry Area Public Library's Reading to Pets program. “We're very proud of him,” she said.

He has been with the Haveys since he was a puppy when the couple lived in Maryland. The couple moved to Marshall Township before building a house and settling in Cranberry Township in 2003.

Havey explained she read about the contest in an AAA newspaper in 2011 and decided to submit a photograph. She got a call from a representative in 2012 that her beloved dog was the winner and would be featured on the 15th edition cover.

Along with cover fame, the winner received additional contest prizes, including cash, pet treats, copies of the book and a Best Western Travel Card usable at more than 4,000 hotels worldwide, including more than 1,600 pet-friendly properties.

The winner also will enjoy a year of star treatment on the AAA.com/PetBook photo gallery.

Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook provides listings for more than 14,000 pet-friendly accommodations in the U.S. and Canada. These include thousands of AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotels, as well as 750 campgrounds.

The detailed hotel listings include fees, permitted pet sizes and conditions of stay for properties at every Diamond Rating level, from clean and simple motels to family-oriented properties to luxurious resorts. The book also includes information about pet-friendly activities, planning tips, travel etiquette and safety.
