No 'soft' in her game

Butler graduate Jenna Geibel is among the all-time leaders in numerous offensive categories with the Slippery Rock University women's softball team.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Look in the record book, you'll find her name — repeatedly.

Butler graduate Jenna Geibel, in her fourth year as the starting third baseman for the Slippery Rock University women's softball team, is among SRU's all-time top 10 in 15 different single-season or career categories.

All of which mean nothing to her.

“I guess I do pay attention to the home runs,” Geibel admitted. “I really want to catch (current assistant coach) Stacey Rhoades. But I need to hit about 11 more.”

It's 10, actually, but who's counting? Rhoades hit 35 homers in her Rock career while Geibel has 26 thus far.

“It's cool just knowing my name is on those lists, even though I really haven't looked at them,” Geibel said. “This is my last year and what I really want is the playoffs.

“I like our chances. I like them a lot.”

SRU softball hasn't reached postseason play since the 2009 season — the year before Geibel's freshman campaign.

Entering a busy week that includes three PSAC West doubleheaders and more games over the weekend, SRU was 10-12 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

The conference record includes a recent twinbill sweep of Mercyhurst.

“We needed to win one game against them at the end of my sophomore season to get into the playoffs and we couldn't do it,” Geibel said. “We've always had trouble with them.

“Being able to beat them early this year is a good sign.”

Geibel began the week hitting .293 — her career average is .391 — with four homers and 19 RBIs. She is second on the team in home runs and RBIs and leads the squad with 14 walks.

“Jenna's hit a little slump of late, but everybody does,” SRU coach Becky Sciacca said. “We can still count on her for the big hit. When we need her, she's there.”

Geibel is the only four-year starter in SRU's lineup this year. The Rock's leadoff hitter, Katie Saluga, is hitting .481 and leads the team with six home runs. Freshman shortstop Katie Kaiser is hitting .417 while freshman left fielder Megan Maloney is hitting .405.

The Rock's team batting average is .313.

“Nobody can pitch around any of our hitters this year and that's making us all better,” Geibel said. “We're all seeing better pitches to hit.”

As Geibel's gained experience, she's gained plate discipline as well.

“When I first came to college, I was swinging at everything,” she said. “The other day, I came up with the bases loaded and took the walk because I knew it meant a run and we have other good hitters in the lineup behind me.

“A couple of years ago, I'd have been swinging from the heels in that situation.”

Sciacca described Geibel as a tireless worker.

“She works on her defensive play, is always swinging a bat. ... Her main goal is to play softball,” the coach said.

“She's just an athlete. Even when she's hurt, she doesn't show it. She just wants to play.”

Sciacci has witnessed Geibel paying the price at third base on numerous occasions.

“Third base is a reaction position and I've seen Jenna get hit with the ball a lot of times,” Sciacca said. “She just recovers and makes the play. She took a liner off her ankle one time and still got the out. She's pretty tough.

“She excels at charging the ball on bunt plays. She's outstanding defensively.”

A sports management major, Geibel will not graduate until next year. While she will seek employment in the sporting world, her ideal job would be coaching.

“I'd love to coach at the Division II level,” she said. “I told our coaches I'll be around next year to help coach and they're all about that. They love when alumni are willing to help out.”
