CRANBERRY TWP — The township supervisors Wednesday night approved changes to the township’s sign ordinance regarding electronic signs. This is the first step in an overhaul of Cranberry’s sign regulations.

The overhaul is expected to take the remainder of the year to complete and will look at the regulations on size, type and placement of commercial signs.

The first change includes the redefinition of sign types and an emphasis on LED and electronic signs with changeable messages.

John Trant, Cranberry’s chief strategy officer, told the supervisors Feb. 28 the change is designed to increase legibility, minimize driver distraction, safeguard appearances and create a better fit with surroundings.

The newly enacted change eliminates the prohibition on signs with changeable copy and focuses on concentrated placement of certain sign types in the township’s commercial core.

It also establishes guidelines governing brightness, the frequency of message changes and transitions between messages.
