Popular early races on horizon

Spring is at least on the calendar, if not in the air.

As of this writing, weather for the last Saturday in March is predicted to include snow, rain and gusty wind as the temperature struggles to reach 40 degrees. That’s far from the sunny 50+ degrees of last year at that date.

Still, no matter the weather, spring in western PA is a great time to stretch your running legs at a choice of popular races on March 30.

One of my favorite events of the year, Cook Forest Half Marathon and 5K, celebrates its 29th year as a run along the Clarion River at 11 a.m. March 30.

Although the weather can be unpredictable, the course is always scenic, the air clear and fresh. The out and back course along the Clarion River is the perfect fix for runners tired of the traffic of city or suburban training routes.

The Cook Forest course has gotten considerably easier since a sizable hill in the last mile of the race was eliminated last year. The current starting line for both out-and-back 5K and half marathon is now on the flat River Road in front of the Pale Whale Canoe Rental.

Cook Forest Half Marathon and 5K benefits Clarion University’s Track and Field team and Clarion Athletic Scholarships. Many team members serve as volunteers at the starting area and at aid stations every 2.5 miles along the course.

It’s nice to see a smiling face along the sparsely populated route.

Cook Forest Half Marathon offers simple post race refreshments of sports drink and cookies. All participants earn commemorative long sleeved t-shirts. Overall and age group winners for the chip-timed runs earn hand-made pottery awards while overall and masters winners also earn a night’s stay at area lodges and cabins.

Last year’s participation at Cook Forest Half Marathon and 5K numbered more than 1,000 runners and walkers, one of the largest crowds in the event’s history. Although Cook Forest Half Marathon accepts day-of-event registrations, I would advise pre-registering to avoid long lines on race day. Online registration as well as a downloadable registration form is available at www.cookforest.com/marathon.

If you prefer a more festive (and crowded) running atmosphere, Just a Short Run in North Park, also on March 30 at 8:30 a.m., is one of the area’s largest distance running events.

Just a Short Run began in 2001 with a half marathon and 5K. A 30K distance was added the following year as a training event for those running spring marathons. In 2010 Just a Short Run added an 8.1 mile option, a great choice for those training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in May.

Just a Short Run continues to grow with the continued popularity of distance running in general. Last year, the event’s registration topped 2,000 with 1,857 runners and walkers completing one of the distances. This year, Just a Short Run may reach its higher 2,500 participant limit.

The growth of Just a Short Run is also due to the event’s attention to runners’ needs and desires. All pre-registered participants receive custom logo shorts instead of the ubiquitous T-shirt commemorative. And all participants will appreciate bag check at the starting area and Just a Short Run’s post race awards party complete with music and food buffet.

The courses for each of the distances are relatively flat, beginning at North Park’s Boathouse and continuing for a short loop to the Ice Rink and the only real hill on the course. The longer runs then circle North Park Lake on the gently rolling pavement. Aid stations with Gatorade, water and energy gels are located at approximately every 1.25 miles along the course, making Just a Short Run a great trial run for marathon and half marathon goal races later this spring.

All pre-registrations are online (unless a paper application is requested) for convenience and to make Just a Short Run a greener event. Online registration will be open until 5 p.m. Tuesday at www.race360.com/14355.

Organizers suggest registering early and picking up your race packet at Elite Runners and Walkers in McKees Rocks on March 27 and 29, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. or March 28, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. to minimize congestion at the Boathouse starting area on Saturday.

Day-of-event registration opens at 6:30 a.m. at the North Park Boathouse if the event doesn’t sell out. (Check www.eliterunners.com). Organizers encourage all participants to arrive at least 45 minutes before starting time, to carpool, and to make use of shuttle service from parking lots at the spillway, Ice Rink and North Park Pool.
