PennDOT outlines county work

Agency keeps focus on bridges

The state Department of Transportation will continue to focus on improving bridges in 2013 with more than a dozen in Butler County scheduled for repair or replacement.

Other major PennDOT projects in the county this year include continuing work on the Route 228/I-79 ramps in Cranberry Township and replacement of the Route 228 railroad bridge, plus realignment of that road’s intersection with Mars-Valencia Road in Adams Township.

PennDOT outlined its construction plans through 2016 on Friday at its annual outreach meeting at Moraine State Park.

Here is a look at work the state intends to complete this year in different sections of the county.

Countywide• Shields Asphalt Paving will do $2.97 million in resurfacing, paving and overlays on several roads, with most of the work being done on Route 8 north of Center Township and on Route 19. The resurfacing of those highways is to be done by September.• Two bridges will benefit from about $2 million in work by the BECDIR Construction: the McBride Bridge northbound only on Route 8 in Penn Township and a Route 28 bridge west of Freeport. Work is scheduled for completion in the fall.• A regional “Sinc-Up” project will invest $500,000 to $1.5 million to coordinate and upgrade traffic signals in and around the county. Twenty-two intersections will be updated across Cranberry Township, Adams Township and Seven Fields; 12 intersections will be updated across Cranberry Township and Marshall Township, Allegheny County; 13 intersections in Butler will be updated; and three intersections in Buffalo Township will be updated.• PennDOT contracted Green Acres Contracting to complete $206,000 worth of guide rail replacements and repairs throughout the county, scheduled to be done by July.

Southwest section• Swank Construction’s $14.78 million continuing reconstruction of the ramps and interchange at Route 228 and I-79 in Cranberry Township is scheduled for completion in October 2014.• Joseph B. Fay Co. will continue its $12.64 million replacement of the Route 228 bridge over the CSX/B&O Railroad and Breakneck Creek, a project which includes improvements to the Route 228/Mars-Valencia Road intersection. It is to be done by August 2014.• Mekis Construction will replace the Little Creek Road Bridge in Lancaster Township for about $1.5 million. Construction is scheduled for completion in August.• Francis J. Palo Inc. has been contracted for about $1.2 million to replace the Eidenau Bridge carrying Textor School Road over Breakneck Creek. The project is scheduled for completion in June.• Plum Contracting has scheduled a fall completion date for its $1.17 million replacement of the Graham Bridge carrying Darlington Road over Brush Creek in Cranberry Township.• Donegal Construction will replace the Muntz Run Bridge, which carries Route 8 in Zelienople, for about $942,000. Construction will start in May and be done in November.• A. Folino Construction’s $452,000 paving project on Route 19 in Zelienople will be done this summer.• PennDOT will accept bids in November for a project widening Route 19 and improving several of its intersections in Cranberry Township. The project cost is estimated at $1 million to $ 2.5 million.

Southeast section• Rehabilitation of the Freeport Bridge, which spans the Allegheny River in Armstrong, Butler and Westmoreland counties, is scheduled for completion this fall. The project includes painting and strengthening the bridge’s steel trusses and the replacement of many girders and the concrete decking.Construction is complete on the new Buffalo Creek Bridge, just south of the Freeport Bridge, which will replace the former Laneville Bridge over the Buffalo Creek.Brayman Construction of Saxonburg began work on the $62.95 million project to renovate the Freeport Bridge and to replace the Laneville Bridge in August 2011.• Streetscape of Saxonburg was awarded a $1.22 million contract to install new sidewalks, curbs and ADA-compliant ramps on Main Street, between Pittsburgh and North Rebecca streets. The project is scheduled for completion in August.• Construction will start this year on a maintenance project covering Route 228 between Route 8 and Saxonburg Road in Middlesex and Clinton townships. The project cost is estimated $1 million to $5 million.• PennDOT will accept bids in May for a project replacing the Route 28/Route 356 ramps near Freeport. The project is expected to cost less than $500,000.

North section• Traffic restrictions started Friday at the Route 422/I-79 interchange in Muddy Creek Township, where Trumbull Corp. will replace two bridges carrying the highway over Route 422 at a cost of $14 million.The project is scheduled for completion in October 2014, but no work will be done this year between Aug. 11 and Aug. 16, during the Pyrotechnics Guild International Convention at Cooper’s Lake, according to Paul Koza, assistant District 10 executive for PennDOT.• Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. will replace the Kiester Road Bridge, over Slippery Rock Creek in Slippery Rock Township, starting next month. The $1.51 million project is scheduled for completion in August.• Allison Park Contractors will replace three box culvert bridges on Route 58 in Marion, Mercer and Venango townships by October at a cost of $1.32 million.• J.C. Lee Construction is scheduled to finish a $700,000 replacement of the Adams Corner Bridge, carrying Route 8 over a tributary of McDonald’s Run in Mercer Township in September.• PennDOT crews will replace the bridge carrying Hooker Road over Bear Creek in Concord Township.
