Constance 'Connie' Baker Covert

Constance Covert

Constance “Connie” Baker Covert, 80, of Butler died after an extended illness.

She was born June 2, 1932, in Zelienople, and was the only child of Charles Brandon Baker and Grace Nickel Baker.

She graduated from Butler High School, where she was a member of the basketball team and a cheer leader. She was also a beauty pageant contestant for Miss Pennsylvania.

After graduation, Mrs. Covert joined Bell Telephone as an operator. She was promoted to a supervisory position shortly thereafter.

She married Melvin “Mel” Covert at First English Lutheran Church in Butler on May 15, 1953, and honeymooned in Miami Beach, Fla., before returning to Butler where Mr. Covert was employed in the transportation department of ARMCO steel, while Connie returned to her job at Bell Telephone. She worked until her pregnancy with her only child, Debra Lee.

Covert then became a full-time homemaker in February 1956.

Mrs. Covert was a member of First English Lutheran Church and the Elks Lodge 170, both in Butler. She was also an avid lover of nature and she was known for being fun loving.

She reinvented herself during her mid-40s by thoroughly involving herself in exercise. Mrs. Covert later became so proficient in aerobics that she taught classes throughout Butler County.

Mr. and Mrs. Covert celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2003 in Florida with their immediate family and close friends.

Mrs. Covert was preceded in death by her husband, Mel L. Covert.

Connie Covert was the mother of Debra Lee Covert-McGrath of North Bethesda, Md., and Venice, Fla. She was also the mother-in-law of Matthew Thomas McGrath, and the grandmother of Lauren Melissa McGrath of London, England, her only grandchild.

COVERT — There will be a joint sunset memorial service for Mel and Connie Covert, on the beach in Sarasota, Fla., for friends and family.Mel and Connie Covert will be laid to rest in the family plot in Florida alongside Mrs. Covert's beloved parents, Charles and Grace Baker, as per their wishes.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E.
