Rhoda Marie Philips

Rhoda Marie “Marie” Philips, 89, of Butler passed away Sunday.

She was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Johnstown, Pa., to the late Myrtle (Hunt) Lynn and Clifford Lynn.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Richard Philips; her beloved sisters, Florence Bellis, Irene Baxter and Dorothy Robb; and brothers, Don Lynn, Elwynn Lynn and Howard Lynn.

She is survived by two cherished children, son, D. Richard Philips of Butler and daughter, Janice (Ralph) Staggers of Butler; two sisters, Joann Biernesser of Allison Park and Helen Thomas of Vancouver, Wash.; brother, Arthur “Mike” Lynn of Butler; five grandchildren, Dawn (Mark) Caudill of Butler, Craig (Linda) Philips of Butler, Aimee (Jim) Cestrone of Butler, Melissa (Doug) Hodinko of Cannonsburg, Pa., and Sydney (Bill) Webb of Morgantown, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Korey and Brooke Caudill, Paige and Zane Cestrone and Hayden Hodinko; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Marie was a homemaker and a lifelong active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Butler, where she diligently served on many of its committees and taught Sunday school and Bible school for more than 25 years. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, chapter 45, having served as Worthy Matron.

Marie will best be remembered as a kind-hearted, compassionate and upstanding person who faithfully strived to live her life according to the teachings of the Bible. She was a devout Lutheran who loved her church, as well as reading and studying scripture. Her kindness and devotion to the Lord serve as an example to those who knew her. She also loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

PHILIPS — Friends of Rhoda Marie (“Marie”) Philips, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 120 Sunset Drive, Butler, with Pastor Joel Benson officiating.Burial will be in the Butler County Memorial Park.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
