BUTLER TWP — Butler graduate Jake Hilliard scored 23 points, but the Butler County Community College men's basketball team dropped a 92-74 decision to Penn Highlands Monday night.
Slippery Rock High graduate Brent Ayers added 19 points and Butler grad Vinnie Schmidt had 16 points for the Pioneers (4-19), who will open up the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference playoffs Friday against an opponent and at a site to be determined.
Penn Highlands outscored BC3 46-37 in each half.
The Slippery Rock and Grove City high school girls basketball teams will both be in action Saturday in the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.Slippery Rock (15-7) will face Mercyhurst Prep (15-7) at 5:30 p.m. at Oil City High School.Grove City (13-9) will battle Villa Maria (20-2) at 4 p.m. at Gannon University.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Tony Campana in a trade that sent right-handed pitchers Jesus Castillo and Erick Leal to the Chicago Cubs.The 26-year-old Campana hit .264 with 30 stolen bases in 89 games with the Cubs last season. He was second in the NL with a stolen base percentage of 90.9 and was tied for third in bunt hits with eight. Campana played 184 games in two seasons with Chicago, hitting .262 with 11 RBIs and 54 steals.Leal and Castillo are both 17-year-olds who signed as non-drafted free agents in 2011.
PHOENIX — Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee for the second time in less than a year and will miss the season.The 27-year-old was injured May 1 at San Diego when he hit a wall while chasing Nick Hundley’s foul popup, cutting short his season after 21 games. Gamel reinjured the knee Saturday during Milwaukee’s first full-squad workout this year.
