Esther Marlowe

Esther Mae Marlowe, 81, of Slippery Rock passed away at Butler Memorial Hospital at 9:34 p.m. Monday.

Born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 29, 1931, she was the daughter of Walter L. Sieburg and Luella W. Cain Sieburg.

She married Joseph Edward Marlowe on Aug. 30, 1951, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1991.

She was a Protestant.

She and her husband owned and operated Marlowe's General Store on Route 108 at Moore's Corners in Worth Township for 28 years until they sold it in 1975. Two weeks after the sale of the store, she and her daughter, Cindy, assumed management of Bob's Sub Shop in Slippery Rock. Cindy took over ownership of Bob's Subs and Cindy and Esther, “Mom,” operated the store ever since.

Esther played a big part in many college kids' lives. She was affectionately known by many college students as “Mom” and later they called her “Gram.”

In addition to her love of family and friends, she had a keen interest in all Pittsburgh sports, but especially the Pittsburgh Penguins. She, along with her daughters, Cindy and Jo Ann, have been season ticket holders of the Pittsburgh Penguins since 1984.

She was a voracious reader and loved to read James Patterson books, mysteries and many others. She fought a courageous five-year battle against lung cancer.

Survivors include her three daughters, Linda L. Wigton and Cindy J. Marlowe, both of Slippery Rock, and Jo Ann Marlowe of Pittsburgh; and a grandson, Joseph Wigton and his wife, Erin.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Della Staley, Jean Rapp and Millicent Quinlan; an infant brother; and an infant great-grandchild.

MARLOWE — Funeral services for Esther Mae Marlowe, who passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, will be at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.Interment will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Worth Township, Butler County.Memorial contributions may be given in the donation of a book in her name to a local library of your choice.
