Maria A. Barnhart, 90, of Butler passed away Monday at her home.

Born in L’Aquila, Italy, on Feb. 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Giuliano and Celeste DeMatteis Andreassi. She arrived in America in 1927 with her mother to join her father.

Mrs. Barnhart was a member of the Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church and the Saint Paul Catholic Women and Christian Mothers.

She worked in the Shell Shop at Pullman Standard during World War II. She also was employed at the Spaide Shirt Factory, and she went on to work at Little Luigi’s Pizza Shop for 25 years.

In her earlier years, she was active in the Catholic Theater Guild, which was under the direction of Father Ralph Young of St. Paul Church.

She enjoyed going to her cabin in Titusville and also enjoyed knitting, gardening and canning.

She is survived by one daughter, Maria Hetrick Stewart and her husband, Dan, of Butler; one granddaughter, Alexandria Hetrick of Butler; two brothers, Raymond A. Andreassi of Butler and Silvio Andreassi and his wife, Shirley, of East Brady; and five sisters, Malphine A. Fogel and her husband, Maurice, of Butler, Lydia M. Snyder Emrick of Butler, Josephine A. Vasbinder and her husband, Arthur, of East Brady, Jean Karnes of Altoona and Helen Bartoe of East Brady.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Barnhart, who passed away May 13, 1990.

BARNHART — Friends of Maria A. Barnhart, who passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, will be received at the Martin Funeral Home, Inc., 429 Center Ave., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday at Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, Butler. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.Information also is available at www.martinfh.net.
