BUTLER TWP — Seneca Valley’s swimming and diving teams felt right at home at Butler’s Senior Night on Thursday.
The Raiders’ boys defeated Butler 109-75 while SV’s girls rallied by winning the final three events to move by the Golden Tornado 99-87.
In the girls’ meet, Seneca trailed 73-67 with the backstroke, breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay remaining.
The Raiders (7-3-1) outscored Butler 9-7 in the backstroke, led by Katie Miller’s first-place effort of one minute, 2.68 seconds.
Maddie Tretter then won the breaststroke before Miller and Tretter teamed with Katie Burkett and Carley Belsterling to take the final relay at 3:47.14.
“It was tough on the girls side, I thought we had a shot to win,” said Butler coach Dave Bocci. “I’m proud of their effort, though. We had several girls make their WPIAL cuts tonight.”
Katie Miller, a veteran of the WPIAL meet, also won the 200 freestyle Thursday for the Raiders with a time of 2:00.53.
“Katie always gives a solid effort,” said SV coach Brian Blackwell. “She is the standard the other girls look to.”
Butler senior star Stephanie O’Toole took first place in the 200 IM (2:07.42) and 100 freestyle (54.49).
“Our biggest goals with Stephanie deal with the state meet,” said Bocci. “We are right on track with them.”
Butler senior Kati Herr also had a strong showing, winning the 50 freestyle (25.96) and contributing to relay wins in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle. In both, she teamed with O’Toole, Taylor Campbell and Jillian McElhaney.
In boys’ competition, Seneca’s Spencer Tretter continued his fine freshman season with victories in the 200 freestyle (1:46.89) and 500 freestyle (4:54.08).
The performance helped SV improve to 6-5 overall.
“He’s been starring for our club team for several years,” said Blackwell of Tretter. “He’s doing what we expected of him this year.
“I’d say he’s a bit stronger in the 200, but certainly has potential in both,” he added. “It’s tough to keep him in certain events because he is getting fast in everything.”
Winning two individual events for the Tornado was Tukker Uniatowski in the 200 individual medley (2:08.39) and breaststroke (1:06.07).
“Tukker is just a freshman and has really been coming on lately,” Bocci said. “We’re forming a better relationship when it comes to trust and training.”
