Doo-wop Doo-wop
SLIPPERY ROCK — The type of girl-group, doo-wop popular in the 1950s and ’60s is captured in “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a pop musical coming March 9 to Slippery Rock University as part of the performing arts series.
The 7:30 p.m. show in the University Union opened off-Broadway and is now on a national tour.
Classic songs include “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “It’s My Party,” “Heat Wave,” “Leader of the Pack,” “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.,” “Rescue Me,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and 20 others.
The revue begins in 1958 where the audience meets four Springfield High School teens performing for their classmates on prom night.
The second part of the show is set a decade later as part of a class reunion, following the “rock revolution.”
“The Marvelous Wonderettes” stars Ashley Pankow, Tiffany Wiesend, Kelly Karcher and Carly Mooney, backed by a live, onstage band.
Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for senior citizens, $18 for those 17 and younger, and $8 for SRU students.
AVI, the campus contract food vendor, will offer a menu of soups, sandwiches, salads, desserts and beverages in the lobby beginning at 6 p.m. No reservations are necessary.
The performing arts series concludes at 4 p.m. April 28 with a performance by The Hunts, a family of nine multiinstrumentalists playing a variety of musical genres.
The Hunts are also world-ranked step dancers, and a step dancing workshop is available for children that day. Registration is required at 724-738-2018.
