WEST SUNBURY — Cindy Morrison, a registered nurse at New Haven Court, couldn’t attend “Holy Hot Dog” on Saturday because she was working, but as the director of the Moniteau Area Food Pantry she is grateful for the donation.

“We’re very appreciative of it this time of year,” said Morrison. “We’re running low on supplies.”

“Holy Hot Dog” was a fundraising event at the North Washington Fire Hall that was led by Moniteau High School seniors Alexa DeMateis and Jarrod Hull. It earned more than $3,000 for the food pantry.

The pantry at the Concord Presbyterian Church in West Sunbury serves 24 to 30 families each week, Morrison said.

Supplies have been cut in half over the past two years as a result of state budget cuts. Food from the Community Action Center of Butler has fallen from 90 to 120 cases of food a month to 30 to 60 cases a month.

Morrison said she’s ordered more food from a county warehouse and gone shopping to try and make up the difference.

“We can always use donations,” said Morrison.

She appreciates boxed foods that enable families to stretch the two pounds of chicken and two pounds of ground chuck they receive each month, she said.

The food pantry also sponsors a free community dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. Nearly 100 people are served, and 130 were served at holiday meals, she said.
