Hampton hangs tough

Butler's Seth Cook fights to get a shot off while being defended by Hampton's Collin Luther on Tuesday during the Tornado's 65-50 defeat at Butler High School.

BUTLER TWP — Hampton produced three quick strikes ... and Butler was out.

The visiting Talbots wiped out an early 13-point deficit by putting together runs of 12-0, 11-0 and 11-0 and went on to defeat the Golden Tornado, 65-50, in a Section 3-AAAA boys basketball game Tuesday night.

Butler (5-10, 2-7) sank seven of its first nine field-goal attempts, driving to the hoop with regularity in building a 23-10 lead with 5:54 left in the first half.

“(The Talbots) battled their way through that and fought hard to get even by the end of the half,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “Then they were just ferocious in the second half.

“That's what good teams do. They find a way.”

For Hampton, that way was its half-court man-to-man defense.

“Their intensity in that defense was the difference in this game,” Clement said. “They came out and pressured and we weren't strong enough with the ball.

“Of course, it's easier to pressure a point guard when you've got a pair of 6-foot-8 guys standing behind.”

The Talbots began forcing turnovers after junior guard Jon Floss sank a 3-pointer to cut the 23-10 deficit to 10.

“Jon hit some clutch shots to get us going, then our takeaways got our transition going,” Hampton coach Joe Lafko said. “Our big guys can run the floor.”

The Talbots actually took a 28-25 lead late in the half before a baseline jumper by Luke Tincha and a short jumper by Dom Pusateri gave the Tornado a one-point halftime lead.

That lead didn't last long.

Trailing 37-35 midway through the third period, Hampton used an 11-0 run to go up by nine. Ahead 46-42 early in the fourth period, the Talbots (13-3, 6-3) used another 11-0 run to go up 57-42 with 4:25 to play.

The lead peaked at 64-44 with 1:58 remaining.

“The turnovers allowed them to get some easy stuff the other way ... some jams, some one and one's ... guys we were taking away early got going,” Clement said.

Butler suffered 20 turnovers to Hampton's 10. Ryan Luther used his 6-8 frame to collect 25 points, nine steals and five rebounds. His 6-7 brother, Collin, had eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

Floss had 15 points, including three treys.

“We switched to a 32 zone in the second half and that gave them trouble,” Lafko said. “Our big guys did a good job of clogging up the passing lanes.”

Ryan Luther had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the Talbots' 49-47 win over the Tornado at Hampton in December.

“Letting any player get nine steals in a game is ridiculous,” Clement said.

Seth Cook paced Butler with 12 points, eight coming in the first quarter. Pusateri scored eight points, Nick Patten contributing six points, five rebounds and two assists. Luke Tincha came off the bench to get six points and five rebounds.

“I'm going to keep fighting until the end of this thing,” Clement said of the season. “We'll work hard in practice, keep strategizing, keep working on new formulas.

“Our seniors have to have enough pride to fight to the end, as well. And our younger kids have to soak up the experience and learn from it.”
