Bethel Park defeats SV hockey

WARRENDALE — Seneca Valley withstood an early rush from Bethel Park — then the Black Hawks finally grabbed the advantage for good.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the second period, the Black Hawks needed just 14 seconds to cash in on its first power play, then quickly tacked on three more goals in a 29-second span a few minutes later en route to a 5-2 victory over the Raiders in PIHL Class AAA action Tuesday night at Warrendale BladeRunners.

“Seneca Valley outworked us for part of the game,” Bethel Park coach Jim McVay. “We survived after we got a couple of goals.”

“Bethel Park’s really disciplined on power plays,” said Raiders coach Anthony Raco. “They forechecked us well in the second period.”

The Raiders (9-3-1) opened the scoring when Andrew Gagnon took a pass from Brendan McFarland and rifled a shot from the faceoff circle through a crowded path to the net with 56 seconds left in the first period.

Bethel Park (8-3) regrouped, particularly when its first power-play opportunity came around.

The Black Hawks’ leading goal and points scorer, Chris Siak, promptly buried a shot after taking a pair of crisp passes from Austin Jameyson and Derek Lesnak for the game’s equalizer with 8:40 left in the period.

“All hockey games against well-coached teams, it’s hard to score five-on-five,” McVay said. “You have to go when you get an advantage.”

Three-and-a-half minutes later, the wheels came off for Seneca Valley.

Siak scored two more goals just 16 seconds apart, then Jacob Worcester added another 13 seconds later to give Bethel Park a 4-1 lead with 4:40 left in the frame.

“(Siak’s) a goal scorer and he scored several goals,” McVay said. “That’s what it says about him. Give him a power-play chance and he knows what to do.”

The Raiders answered with a goal by McFarland off a deflection from Black Hawks goalie Austin McGinty from a shot by Peter Kippin with 52 seconds left in the second period.

That was as close as the Raiders would get as Spencer Bawcom’s power-play goal for Bethel Park with 4:44 left in regulation closed out the scoring.

Despite the flurry of quick scores in the second period, Seneca Valley goalie Tanner Pfeffer kept the Raiders in the contest, making 30 saves.

“The end result could have been better for him,” Raco said. “He put everything out there for his teammates.

“We just need to be more consistent.”

Notes: McGinty finished with 18 saves. ... Bethel Park converted two of its three power-play chances — the clock ran out on its final opportunity — while Seneca Valley was 0-for-2. ... The Raiders will host Central Catholic on Tuesday.
