Alumna gives $7M to Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON — A former student has left Westminster College in a $7 million gift to endow a scholarship fund for students seeking science careers.

The school announced the gift Tuesday from the estate of Helen Louise Lemmon to endow The Lemmon Family Scholarship.

The gift by Lemmon, who died in 2011, was given as part of a $50 million fundraising effort of which the school has raised more than $37 million.

Lemmon studied for two years at Westminster after entering the school in 1938, studying secretarial science. She later worked as secretary to the president of Allegheny Steel.

Westminster was founded in 1852 and is related to the Presbyterian Church USA. The school has about 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students in 41 majors.
