MONACA — Police say a 15-year-old student has been arrested for having a loaded handgun at a shopping mall that houses an alternative school for disruptive students to which the boy had been assigned.

Center Township police Chief Barry Kramer is not identifying the boy because of his age, but says the boy faces gun-related offenses. He had been living in a foster home in Aliquippa and was on probation for a previous crime the chief didn't detail.

A Beaver County newspaper says the boy was recently enrolled in the Phase 4 Learning Center at the Beaver Valley Mall where a teacher spotted him with the gun in a common area of the mal on Monday, outside of the school. Police say the boy did not threaten anyone with the gun.

PITTSBURGH — A blood clot is to blame for the death an inmate who was returning to the Allegheny County Jail after a stay in the hospital.The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says 46-year-old Larry Reitz Jr. died Monday from a pulmonary embolism. A blood clot in his leg broke free and traveled to his lungs.Reitz was being transferred from UPMC Mercy Hospital back to the county jail. When he stood up to get out of the van, authorities say he collapsed to the ground, striking his head.He was then transported back to Mercy where he was pronounced dead. There's no word on why he had been hospitalized in the first place.

CANONSBURG — State police say a man twice tried to kill himself on Interstate 79 in southwestern Pennsylvania before going to work.The Associated Press is not identifying the 22-year-old Washington, Pa. man because of the nature of the incidents, but police say he first tried to end his life by jumping out of a moving vehicle that was driving him to work in Canonsburg, about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh. That happened about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.About a half hour later, police say the man stepped over a guide rail into the path of a tractor-trailer which tried to avoid the man but knocked him out of his shoes.Troopers from the Washington barracks say the man jumped up, grabbed his shoes, slid down a hillside and walked to work. He was since been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.

PITTSBURGH — A Texas man will spend 20 years in federal prison for supplying a cocaine pipeline that also included a former assistant western Pennsylvania high school football coach.Thirty-nine-year-old Vincent Middlebrooks, of Houston, was sentenced Monday by a federal judge in Pittsburgh.Middlebrooks had previously pleaded guilty after an investigation begun when a Texas trucker, 46-year-old Gathon Dudley Shannon, of Houston, was arrested in October 2011. Authorities found more than 35 pounds of cocaine and $669,000 in Shannon's vehicle. He'll be sentenced April 22.His arrest led to charges against Middlebrooks and two other men, including 36-year-old Carlos Cleckley, who formerly coached at Beaver Falls High School.

BIG BEAVER — A badly burned body discovered in a western Pennsylvania house fire last week has been positively identified as the home's owner.Beaver County Coroner Teri Tatalovich-Rossi says the victim is 68-year-old Patricia Parisi.Officials in Big Beaver have suspected that since her house caught fire about 2 a.m. Thursday, but dental records and other means had to be used to confirm that.

PITTSBURGH — A Georgia man has pleaded guilty to interfering with an AirTran crew on an Atlanta-to-Pittsburgh flight in October, but refused to comment along with his federal public defender.A Pittsburgh newspaper reports 34-year-old Marc Malone, of Hogansville, Ga., pleaded guilty before a federal judge in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.Malone was charged by Allegheny County police with public drunkenness after the flight landed at Pittsburgh International Airport on Oct. 10.The FBI charged him last month with flight crew interference alleging he began acting strangely, saying “I need to get off now” and “I want to get out” while moving toward the front of the plane. The FBI says Malone pushed a flight crew member, swore and threatened the crew after they subdued him with plastic “flex” cuffs.Malone will be sentenced May 8.
