BC3 student awarded national scholarship

BUTLER TWP — A Butler County Community College nursing student recently was awarded a $1,000 national scholarship and will be the face of BC3 on its billboard at the intersection of Route 8 and Decatur Drive.

Ashley Hevesy, an officer of the Rho Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society at BC3, received a Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship by PTK for 2012-13. The scholarship program defrays educational costs for students enrolled at a community college and encourages student leadership development through active PTK membership.

Hevesy said, in a statement released by BC3, she plans to apply the scholarship money toward her tuition. She is one of just 180 students nationwide to receive the award.

To be eligible for the scholarship, Hevesy was required to be a PTK member, maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, have completed 12 to 36 semester hours and be free from any academic disciplinary action.

Students also were required to write three essays on assigned topics given by PTK, provide a letter of recommendation from a professor and send in their transcripts.

Hevesy also is a BC3 student ambassador and works part-time at Butler Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s assistant while working toward her associate degree.
