Newly versatile Angerett sparks SR
SLIPPERY ROCK — Haley Angerett has always been a deadly outside shooter.
The senior guard on the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team, Angerett drained a Butler County-leading 44 3-pointers last season and 28 the season before.
This year, though, Angerett already has shown a new side to her game.
Angerett is just as apt to drive around a defender instead of sit behind the arc and settle for a long jumper. She can be a point guard in a pinch and has become a very good defender.
And it all came from hard work.
“It’s a daily thing,” Angerett said. “I spend at least some part of my days working on those things. There weren’t many days (in the offseason) when I wasn’t in the gym working hard.”
Angerett scored 18 points for the Rockets in a win over Lakeview Friday in the West Middlesex Tournament, then scored 15 more against the hosts Saturday in a 47-40 victory.
Her weekend earned her the tournament MVP.
For Angerett, it was vindication of sorts.
She wants to play basketball in college and she said time is running out for her to prove she is more than just a shooter.
“It’s hard to realize the number of high school games you are going to play are dwindling,” Angerett said. “If I want colleges to come looking, I’m going to have to give them something to see.”
That includes moving all over the court.
Slippery Rock girls basketball coach Christin Miller said using Angerett at point guard at times was too intriguing an idea to dismiss.
“It’s a lot harder to press a 5-9 guard than a 5-4 one,” Miller said. “She’s worked very hard on her ball handling.”
Angerett, though, initially balked at the idea.
“At first, I hated it,” Angerett said. “I didn’t really like to dribble the ball too much. The more I have done it, the better I have gotten at it, the more I like it.”
With Angerett adding more dimensions to her game, there are some pretty high hopes in Slippery Rock these days.
The Rockets are loaded with talent with the return of lightning quick guard Morgan Siebka, her freshman sister Marissa Siebka, and a couple of imposing post players in Emily Campbell and Nicole Papley.
Throw in point guard Riley McGonigle and Slippery Rock has a very eclectic and balanced starting five.
Papley had 18 points against Lakeview as well, but injured her ankle early in the game against West Middlesex. It’s not expected to keep her out long, however.
Miller said a District 10 title is one of the goals.
“I definitely think we can do that,” Angerett said. “We have a lot of talent and we give a lot of effort.”
