Counselor jailed in heroin case

PITTSBURGH — A suspended guidance counselor at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh has been jailed on charges she sold heroin from her home.

Police in Forest Hills filed the charges against 36-year-old Kelly Scherer after they say informants told them they could buy drugs from her, and an undercover officer actually did. That happened in September 2011, though police didn’t arrest Scherer until late Thursday and haven’t explained the delay in charging her. Online court records don’t list an attorney for Scherer.

The school issued a statement Friday saying Scherer had been suspended for “unsatisfactory job performance” even before her arrest. School officials and police say there’s no indication Scherer possessed or sold drugs at the school.

Scherer faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
