PITTSBURGH — A judge postponed a preliminary hearing for a state deputy attorney general and his wife after prosecutors added additional charges that they physically abused their two adopted children from Ethiopia.

The hearing for 33-year-old Douglas Barbour and his wife, 30-year-old Kristen Barbour, of Franklin Park, is now scheduled for Jan. 18 after Allegheny County prosecutors on Monday added reckless endangerment and additional aggravated assault charges.

Defense attorney Charles Porter says it makes no sense that the Barbours would abuse their adopted children and not their biological children, who are 2 and 4.

Porter says the couple did their best to cope with the children's extraordinary needs.

ELLWOOD CITY — A man charged in the shooting death of another man after both were kicked out of a western Pennsylvania bar over the weekend says he acted in self-defense.Twenty-five-year-old Ian Frey of Ellwood City is charged in Lawrence County with criminal homicide and first-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Keith Knox of Wampum.Authorities say they were ejected after fighting inside Weisz's Hazel Manor Restaurant and Lounge in Ellwood City shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday.A friend of Knox's told police that Frey walked toward his car and Knox followed despite the friend's efforts to stop him.Lt. David Kingston said that Frey told investigators that he was trying to leave when Knox opened the car door and attacked him, so he fired.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers and the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority are trying to convince a judge who should pay to add 3,000 seats to 11-year-old Heinz Field.The Steelers contend their lease requires the authority to pay about two-thirds of the $38 million the team expects it will cost to add the end zone seats and a new video scoreboard.But the authority's attorney says that provision kicks in only if half of the NFL's stadiums have had similar expansions and at least 25 percent of the cost of those other expansions were funded with tax dollars. Authority attorney Walter DeForest says that hasn't happened.The stadium now has 65,050 seats.The Steelers sued when a deal to finance the authority's share with parking and ticket surcharges fell through.
