PITTSBURGH — Authorities say a Pittsburgh police officer shot a motorist who dragged him more than 100 yards when fleeing a traffic stop.

Police say the motorist was undergoing surgery for multiple gunshot wounds following the incident Sunday night in the Highland Park neighborhood. The officer underwent treatment for hand and arm injuries.

Deputy Chief Paul Donaldson says the suspect put the car in gear after being approached by two officers and one of the officers tried to reach into the vehicle. Donaldson says the officer fired in self-defense.

The vehicle eventually stopped when it crashed into a home.

MEYERSDALE — State police are calling in a forensic anthropologist to help gather and study human remains found along the Great Allegheny Passage biking and hiking trail in southwestern Pennsylvania.Troopers from the Somerset barracks were on the scene for several hours Sunday after someone on the trail reported the suspected remains. State police spokesman Trooper Steve Limani says investigators have confirmed the remains are human, but says a team led by Mercyhurst University's Dennis Dirkmaat will be there today to gather and study the remains.
