BC3 Alumni Association honors duo
BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Community College Alumni Association announced Monday that Candy Hartley, Class of 1984, and Robert J. Olszewski Jr., Class of 1996, have been named the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients.
They were recognized for using their BC3 educations and experience to achieve both personal success and community service.
Hartley enrolled at BC3 in 1982 as a single mother and graduated in 1984 with an associate's degree in business management. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1986 in business management from Slippery Rock University. In 1990, she co-established Unlimited Staffing.The staffing agency celebrates 22 years in business this year.Hartley is a lifetime member of the BC3 Alumni Association and was a member of the BC3 Alumni Council for six years. She recently established the Candy Hartley '84 Scholarship, which will help non-traditional female students.Hartley also has been an active member in the Butler AM Rotary Club for 11 years, serving as the club's president during the creation of the Purple Playground at Alameda Park. She is a mother of three children and grandmother to 10.
Olszewski is a Knoch High School graduate, and he earned a CNC machine technology degree from BC3 in 1996. He also studied computer aided drafting and design at BC3 and computer programming at Community College of Allegheny County.He is a lifetime member in the BC3 Alumni Association.Olszewski was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 13 months, and his parents were told he would not be able to walk or talk, a diagnosis he has overcome.In 1986 at age 11, he was featured in a national documentary for the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon and was introduced by the late John Ritter. Olszewski received the Lifesteps Star Award in 2010 for “incredible determination to succeed overcoming life's challenges.”He also received the Distinguished Toastmaster Award from Toastmasters International and is a motivational speaker, using his story of living with cerebral palsy to inspire others.
