This week the Butler Transit Authority has begun to install and use a new fare collection system for cash and smart cards as the authority begins to phase out paper tickets.

The fare collection system includes bill and coin validation readers, much like a vending machine, which will eliminate the foreign currency and objects the authority sometimes gets in its drop box fareboxes.

In coming weeks, the new fareboxes will accept cash only. The smart cards will be phased in following a successful launch of the smart cards at the Port Authority in Pittsburgh, according to a BTA news release.

Due to the electronic nature of the new system, the BTA has implemented new procedures for cash-paying passengers.

The fareboxes will accept exact change only, using $1 bills, $1 coins, quarters, dimes or nickels. Foreign currency and objects will be rejected.

Riders must have exact change for each rider as well.

For example, if a rider is paying for an adult and a child aged 7 to 12, that rider cannot insert $2. He must insert $1.25 and 75 cents separately, the release said.

The authority will provide a grace period through Nov. 30, when riders need not have exact change, to get passengers used to the new system.

Drivers are not permitted to insert money for any passenger.

Also, transfers now will be given upon boarding. Passengers are asked to tell their driver when paying that they will need to transfer.

Transfers still will be good for one hour and 10 minutes. This new policy is for both paid and free transfers, the release said.

Finally, passes should be handed to the driver, not placed in the farebox.

The new system is part of a regional fare collection project headed by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, and includes Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority, Washington City, Westmoreland Transit Authority and the Fayette Area Transit Authority.

Veterans ride free

In observance of Veterans Day, the Butler Transit Authority will offer free rides to all military veterans on Monday.

Veterans can get a free bus pass for Monday at the authority's downtown terminal, 113 E. Cunningham St., by showing their veteran's ID card, military ID card or their DD214 documentation of separation papers.
