40th District does not include county

It will move to eastern Pa. in '14

The state Senate’s 40th District no longer includes any portions of Butler County and, in several years, won’t include any portion of Western Pennsylvania.

That’s because the district in 2014 is set to move to the eastern part of the state as part of the redistricting process, which was based on population shifts documented in the 2010 census.

That same redistricting process moved the district out of the county entirely for this election cycle. Before the move, voters in the southern portion of the county were included in the district.

It’s been a tumultuous year for the 40th District in addition to the redistricting.

An Allegheny County jury earlier this year convicted former state Sen. Jane Orie of several felony charges related to allegations she improperly misused taxpayer funds.

She is now serving a 2½- to 10-year state prison sentence.

Voters during a special election on Aug. 7 chose state Sen. Randy Vulakovich as her replacement. He will serve out the remainder of Orie’s term, which expires in 2014.

Before the latest redistricting, the 40th District included Callery, Connoquenessing, Evans City, Harmony, Mars, Seven Fields, Valencia and Zelienople. It also included the townships of Adams, Buffalo, Clinton, Connoquenessing, Cranberry, Forward, Jackson, Middlesex and Penn.
