A-C Valley volleyball reaches District 9 finals

When A-C Valley's Jessica Callender and her teammates get on a roll, they get on a roll.

In Thursday's District 9 Class A volleyball playoff action, Callender opened Game 1 with seven consecutive service points that helped the Falcons get off to a fast start in defeating visiting Kane 25-15, 27-25, 25-18.

Callender also reeled off seven consecutive points in Game 3, turning a 9-8 deficit to a 15-9 lead en route to the sweep.

Kelsey Boocks had six straight service points to help the Falcons (15-1) pull away in Game 1 while Emily Quaill recorded seven consecutive points in Game 2, which turned a 22-17 hole into a 24-22 advantage.

Kane scored the next three points to go up 25-24 before the Falcons tied it, then Boocks earned the final two points.

In all, Callender finished with 15 service points, including three aces, Quaill 12 points (three aces), 11 digs and eight assists and Boocks 10 points and five blocks.

Alexis Linamen added 10 digs and seven kills, Meredith Snyder nine digs, five kills, 14 assists and six blocks and Mikayli Terwilliger added five kills, also for A-C Valley.

The Falcons will advance to Saturday's District 9 Championship at St. Marys on Saturday, joined by Clarion, Port Allegany and another team to be determined.

Using a round-robin format, the top two squads will qualify for the PIAA tournament, starting next week.

Ft. LeBoeuf 3, Slippery Rock 0 — In District 10 Class AA semifinal action, the Bison swept past the Rockets in straight sets 25-11, 25-20, 25-22.No other information was available.

Villa Maria 9, Slippery Rock 2 — The Rockets (12-7-1) fell to Villa Maria in this District 10 Class AA semifinal contest at Harbor Creek.No other details were available.

Freeport 5, Serra Catholic 2 — The Yellowjackets kicked off their season with a PIHL Class A victory at the Belmont Complex.
