WPIAL lays out football brackets

PITTSBURGH — Mars, Freeport and Seneca Valley will all enjoy home games as the WPIAL announced its football pairings on Monday.

All first-round contests are slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday.

In Class AAA, the Planets — the Greater Allegheny Conference champions — will host Blackhawk (3-6), who placed fifth out of the Parkway Conference.

Mars was given the No. 2 seed behind Thomas Jefferson.

Knoch (7-2), which tied for the second-best record in the Greater Allegheny Conference with Hampton and Franklin Regional, but lost to both, will travel to West Mifflin to face the Titans (8-1), runners-up in the Big Nine Conference.

In Class AA, Freeport (7-2), the Allegheny Conference champions, will host Beaver Falls (7-2), which was third in the Midwestern Conference.

Seneca Valley (8-1), which placed second in the Northern Eight Conference, is seeded fourth and will host Hempfield (4-5), which tied for fourth place in the Foothills Conference.

Butler (4-5), making its first playoff appearance since 1998, will travel to face Southeastern Conference runner-up Mt. Lebanon (7-2), which tied Upper St. Clair with the best record in the conference at 7-1.
