Rinker claims 2nd in state
Slippery Rock senior Brett Rinker shot an even-par 71 in the second round of the PIAA Class AAA Boys Golf Championships Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Club in York, finishing in a tie for second.
Rinker, who was a medalist 36 times in his career, shot a 2-over 73 in the first round.
Craig Homberger of Manheim Township won the tournament by a stroke over Rinker and Tommy Nettles of Peters Township.
“The two were dead even for the tournament entering the 17th hole today,” Slippery Rock coach Merle Whitmer said. “Brett finished with a bogey-bogey and the Manheim kid had a par and bogey. The last hole was really tough.
“Brett played solid golf both days. He finished third as a sophomore, second as a senior. He had a great career for us.”
Freeport's Audrey Clawson carded a 41-39—80 to finish seventh out of 18 girls in Class AA at the PIAA Girls Golf Championships.
Clawson, a freshman, had a two-day total of 166. Cara Basso of Villa Maria won the tournament with a total score of 150 and cleared the field by 10 strokes.
Seton LaSalle 3, Knoch 1 — The Knights (11-7) ended their season with a heartbreaking WPIAL Class AA playoff loss Tuesday night. Knoch won the first set 25-14 before losing 29-27, 29-27, 25-22.Celina Sanks had 24 kills and 11 blocks for Knoch. Mary Zellhart contributed 12 kills, eight blocks and 14 service points; Kara Fitzpatrick 13 service points.A-C Valley 3, Union 0 — The Falcons (13-1) closed the regular season with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-13 victory.Jessica Callender served up seven aces, seven digs and six kills and Meredith Snyder 19 assists and 10 kills for A-C Valley.Kelsey Boocks added eight kills and four blocks, while Makayla Terwilliger tallied eight kills.The Falcons will now await the District 9 Class A playoff seedings.
