Staying grounded
GROVE CITY — Have defenses been harassing you? Need a first down now?
Better call Price, Williams and Reznor.
The three Grove City High running backs aren't a law firm, but the trio has been handing out some serious judgements against the opposition this season.
And they epitomize unselfishness in the balanced Eagles' offensive attack.
There's never a carry until they open up holes for you.
“If you don't block for the other guys, you're not getting the ball,” said junior Foster Reznor.
“I like blocking more than running the ball, to be honest,” added senior Harold Price. “I take a lot of pride in blocking for my teammates and opening up running room for them. “It's a lot more rewarding to see one of my teammates make a cut off one of my blocks and go for big yardage.”
Price trails his two teammates, senior Chad Williams and Reznor, but not by much.
The three backs are within 34 yards of each other. Reznor leads the team with 490 yards rushing; Williams has 487 and Price 456 despite missing a game due to a knee injury.
Reznor, too, has been grappling with an injury this season.
“He had an ankle injury early in the summer and even during two-a-day practices, he was battling that,” said Grove City coach Jeff Bell, who always has had a penchant for dividing carries among his running backs over the years.
“It's affected his mobility and speed, but he's getting better every week,” Bell added. “I think he's capable of breaking out soon.”
Price sprained the MCL in his right knee earlier in the season and sat out the game against Hickory — the only loss suffered by the Eagles this season.
He has played the last three games with a brace on his knee.
“I just take it day to day, really,” Price said. “I ice it every day.”
Price has shown little effects of the balky knee, rushing for 251 yards on 33 carries since the injury.
“I'm really good at hiding it,” Price said. “It hurts a lot. It's just something I'm going to have to deal with it.”
And then there is Williams, a senior who starred on special teams and defense last year, but had little opportunity to carry the football.
This year, he's gotten his chance.
His first three rushing attempts of the season resulted in touchdowns and he leads Grove City with eight scores on the ground.
“He has a great attitude and worked hard for his opportunity,” Bell said. “He's made the most of it. He's a good blocker and receiver. He's a complete back. And what he does on special teams and defense, boy, I'd hate to see where we'd be without him.”
The three are very close off the field and have a friendly competition while on it.
“Yeah, guys will say a couple of things (if they get the most yards),” Reznor said. “It's all in good fun, though. As long as we win, nothing else really matters.”
The three had perhaps their best game against Slippery Rock last week in a 34-14 victory.
With the offensive line back on the field at the same time after sustaining several injuries, Grove City rolled up 363 yards rushing and 25 first downs against the Rockets.
As it has been all season, the rushing yardage was about as balanced as could be: Price had 97 yards, Reznor 92 and Williams 90.
“It was nice to have all those guys back up front,” Williams said. “I think we're a good team that hasn't played up to our true potential yet. Having everyone back will certainly help.”
As the Eagles have found out, it's good to have Price, Williams and Reznor on your side.
