PITTSBURGH — Authorities say two children have died in a Pittsburgh house fire.

Police say the blaze began about 3:20 p.m. Friday in the Greenfield neighborhood.

Officials say a 3-year-old girl named Irihanna Hayward died at the scene. They say a 4-year-old named Kamari Thomas died at a nearby hospital.

Their babysitter is in critical condition after jumping from a third-floor window to escape the flames.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Gun found, district cancels dances

MIDDLETOWN — A school district in central Pennsylvania has canceled a pair of homecoming dances after officials discovered a loaded gun at a high school.

The Middletown School District sent an e-mail to parents about the incident Friday afternoon.

According to the e-mail, the gun was confiscated earlier in the day at Middletown High School. It said an unspecified number of students were taken into custody.

The district posted a message on its website canceling the dances slated to be held hours later at the middle- and high schools on Friday night. It said the events would be rescheduled.

Pitt tops funding goal of $2 billion

PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh says it has topped its $2 billion fundraising goal.

Chancellor Mark Nordenberg said Friday that more than 182,000 donors have contributed to the capital campaign, an effort that has enabled major construction projects at all five Pitt campuses, plus supported educational and research initiatives.

Pitt began the “Building Our Future Together” campaign 12 years ago with the goal of raising $500 million. After reaching that milestone in 2002, the target was doubled to $1 billion. In 2007, the goal was doubled again to $2 billion.

The university received $125 million — the largest gift in school history — from former steel executive William Dietrich last year. In recognition, Pitt’s School of Arts and Sciences has been named for Dietrich’s father.

FBI in Philly reports theft of $100 bills

PHILADELPHIA — The FBI is reporting an unusual heist of some newly designed $100 bills that aren’t going into circulation until next year.

Special Agent Frank Burton Jr. said the cash was stolen from a plane that arrived at Philadelphia International Airport around 10:25 a.m. Thursday from Dallas.

Investigators said these Benjamins are easy to spot. The new bills have sophisticated elements to thwart counterfeiters, like a disappearing Liberty Bell in an orange inkwell and a bright blue security ribbon.

The FBI said a “large amount” of bills were stolen but agents aren’t giving specifics.
