Seneca's super soph
WEST VIEW — There are many playmakers on the Seneca Valley football team.
You can now count T.J. Holl among them.
The sophomore came up big for the Raiders Friday night at Martorelli Stadium, catching a touchdown pass in the first half and forcing two fumbles in the fourth quarter, recovering one as the Raiders downed North Hills 40-26 Friday night.
“This is the third game I’ve started,” said Holl. “I was getting my chance and I knew I could make a big play. It feels great. Nothing beats Friday nights.”
Holl forced his first turnover on the first play of the fourth quarter. North Hills trailed 33-26, but had fourth-and-goal from the 7.
North Hills quarterback Brian Johnson took the snap and rolled right, but Holl raced off the weak-side edge and mauled Johnson at the 11. The ball popped free and Nick Dahlstrom picked it up and returned it to the Indians’ 42.
That drive led to no points, as Chad Izenas missed a 31-yard field goal, but Holl’s next strip helped Seneca Valley close out the game.
With 9:40 left, North Hills’ Josh Hulbert fumbled and Holl recovered at the Indians’ 24.
Three plays later, Forrest Barnes scored from the 3 and the Raiders led 40-26.
Seneca Valley’s defense gave up several big plays earlier in the game — a 28-yard scoring run by Jordan Blackmon and a 42-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Hulbert — helped North Hills lead 19-18 late in the second quarter. In all, there were six lead changes in the first two periods.
Holl’s 7-yard touchdown reception from Jordan Brown gave the lead back to the Raiders at halftime, but Holl and his teammates knew the defense had to improve in the second half.
“All of their big plays came because of missed tackles,” said Holl. “We just had to find it in ourselves to make the plays.”
The North Hills defense also came up with a big play in the third quarter.
Seneca Valley’s Jon Dorogy fumbled on a second-down play from the North Hills 23.
Kevin Koch picked up the ball and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown, cutting SV’s lead to 33-26.
“Our guys closed the book on a couple of bad plays,” said Seneca Valley coach Don Holl. “They responded. We We haven’t won a championship yet, but that’s a championship mentality.
Seneca Valley took a 33-19 lead when R.J. McCauley caught abn 8-yard pass from Brown with 7:36 left in the third quarter.
“This is a tough place to play and North Hills (5-2, 3-2) has a lot of pride. This is a big win.”
Seneca Valley’s offense dropped 40 points on an Indians’ defense that had given up just 10 points per game.
Barnes rushed for 154 and three touchdowns.
Brown completed 11-of-18 passes for 204 and two touchdowns.
“We just needed to keep our heads in the game and stick together,” said SV offensive lineman Scott Hillebrand, who helped the Raiders roll up more than 400 yards of offense.
Seneca Valley (6-1, 5-1) will host Bethel Park in a non-conference game next Friday.
North Hills coach Jack McCurry was not available for comment.
