Soaring Eagles

Grove City's Taylor Gregg, right, tries to slow down Slippery Rock's Harley Boyd on Monday during the Eagles' 2-0 win over the Rockets in a Region 2 clash.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Olivia Andrews has had her good days and bad days as a goalkeeper for the Grove City High girls soccer team.

Monday was one of those good days.

The junior stopped 16 shots and helped the Eagles earn a 2-0 shutout win over Slippery Rock at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on a frigid Monday night.

“It feels good because last year I got worse as the season went on,” Andrews said. “This year, I'm getting better.”

And so is Grove City (7-5, 4-3), which started the season 1-4, but has improved steadily.

The proof of that came against the Rockets, a team that swamped the Eagles 4-1 in a meeting last month.

This time, it was Grove City's turn to shine.

“I think from the beginning of the season we knew we had it, we knew we could play with Hickory, play with Slippery Rock,” said Grove City coach Matt Nichols. “I'm very pleased with how we played.”

A big reason for this win was Andrews, who turned away shot after shot off the feet of the strong Slippery Rock forwards.

Andrews made nine saves in the first half — some of them challenging ones — to make an early goal by Julie DiStasi hold up.

“We've been getting better and better,” Andrews said. “It's nice to see. It was nice to beat them because we are very close with their coach (Les Smith).”

Grove City only has three seniors on the roster and started three sophomores against the Rockets.

Aubri McCoy, a junior, gave the Eagles an important insurance goal when her boot from 30 yards out found the top-left corner of the net with 14:47 remaining in the match.

“That took a lot of the pressure off,” Andrews said.

For Slippery Rock (6-6, 4-2), it was its second straight loss in the region after starting the league schedule 4-0.

Smith, though, said his team played well despite the loss.

“I look at losses, did you lose, or did you get beat?” Smith said. “And truthfully, we lost here tonight. It was a good game. They finished their two goals and we didn't.”

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities.

Even in a losing effort, Slippery Rock goalkeeper Raquel Huff stopped nine shots.

The teams combined for 23 shots on goal.

“I'm very happy,” Nichols said. “Every game we're getting better and better.”

Slippery Rock must now regroup again. The Rockets started 0-4 before a six-game winning streak. Now, the team is on another skid.

The schedule is kind to the Rockets, however.

Slippery Rock's next two matches are against Oil City and Meadville, teams the Rockets beat by a combined score of 16-1 earlier in the season.

“We have an opportunity to get energized, bounce back and score some goals,” Smith said. “They'll bounce back. They always do.”
