Raiders breeze by Shaler, 49-0
JACKSON TWP — Football players often speak of striving for perfection.
Jordan Brown was one incompletion away from it Friday night.
Seneca Valley’s senior signal caller completed 9-of-10 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns as the Raiders breezed past visiting Shaler 49-0.
The victory secured a WPIAL Quad A playoff berth for the Raiders (5-1, 4-1).
Brown’s three scoring passes came in a span of seven minutes of the second quarter, turning a 7-0 lead into a 28-0 stranglehold on the Titans.
Touchdowns to Jon Dorogy of 49 and 25 yards were sandwiched around a 9-yard pass to R.J. McCauley.
“Going 9 of 10, I guess I should give him grief about the one incompletion,” SV coach Don Holl said with a grin. “He was hitting his targets and they were making plays after the catch. That’s a good recipe.”
The third scoring pass, which came with 1:06 left in the first half, saw Dorogy gain a step on Shaler cornerback Brad Good. Brown lofted the pass into the left corner of the end zone, where Dorogy, fully extended, caught the ball and maintained control after hitting the ground.
“Shaler was playing a lot of man coverage tonight,” Brown said. “I just had to put the ball in the air and let our guys make the plays.”
Dorogy ended the night with three catches for 85 yards and McCauley registered four receptions for 79 yards.
As if the Titans didn’t have enough trouble on defense, their offense was terrorized by SV’s defensive front for much of the game.
The Raiders managed five sacks and held Shaler (0-6, 0-5) to just 10 yards on the ground on 27 attempts.
“Coach Holl has been here (four years) and he’s built a solid program,” said Titans first-year coach Chris Siegle. “You can tell their kids have put in the time in the weight room.”
Austin Hook, Nick Dahlstrom, Steven Gaviglia, Dan Miller and Zarian Prenatt were among SV’s defenders making Good’s stay at NexTier Stadium a miserable one.
The senior quarterback completed 12 passes in the game, but many of them went for short yardage as his offensive line was unable to protect him for long on each play. He ended the night with 89 yards through the air and just 1 yard rushing in 15 attempts.
“Like every other player on the team, he’s learning this offense for the first time,” Siegle said of his quarterback. “He’s making strides every week.”
“Early on in the game, we were playing zone and they were able to make some plays against it,” said Holl. “Credit our defensive coaches for making some adjustments and the players for going out and executing.”
SV’s Forrest Barnes ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. His 12-yard scoring run late in the first quarter put the Raiders up 7-0.
Chad Izenas kicked five extra points for the Raiders, who will travel to North Hills (5-1, 3-1) next Friday.
