Butler facing cream of crop

WEXFORD — Winning breeds winning, most definitely.

North Allegheny High School football is living proof of that theory.

The Tigers (4-0, 3-0) host Butler (2-2, 2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Newman Stadium having won 33 of their 35 games played since the start of the 2010 season.

NA’s lone losses during that stretch are 23-20 to Central Dauphin in the 2011 PIAA semifinals and 21-16 to North Hills in the 2010 regular season finale.

The Tigers won the WPIAL Class AAAA title both years and are bidding to become the first team ever to win three consecutive WPIAL Quad-A titles. North Allegheny played 15 games last season and 16 in 2010.

“Our seniors now were sophomores when we won the state title in 2010,” NA coach Art Walker Jr. said. “They’ve had a lot of exposures to big games and how to be successful.

“All of those practices and pressures ... They pay off as players mature. Now these seniors are showing the current sophomores how it’s done.”

And they’re doing a good job.

North Allegheny opened the season with a 39-14 triumph at Mt. Lebanon before rolling through its first three Northern Eight foes; 48-7 over Fox Chapel, 45-3 over Seneca Valley and 35-3 over Pine-Richland.

Walker said the stability of his coaching staff has plenty to do with his team’s steady success on the field.

“We have 11 varsity coaches here and eight of them have been with me the entire time,” said Walker, now in his eighth season at North Allegheny. “The few changes we have made, guys have come up from our ninth grade or middle school program.

“Any head football coach who says he’s doing the job all by himself is lying. Assistant coaches never get the credit they should.”

Quarterback and returning starter Mack Leftwich triggers the Tigers’ attack. He has completed 45 of 71 passes for 960 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. His favorite target is Gregg Garrity — son of the former Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers receiver — who has 20 catches for 387 yards and five TDs.

Four other NA players — Brendan Coniker, Elijah Ziese, Skylar Cox and Zach Lyon — have multiple catches for between 98 and 162 total yards.

“Gregg is clearly our receptions leader, but the ball gets spread around,” Walker said. “Just like Alex (DiCiantis) is our rushing leader and other guys have scored touchdowns.

“Mack gives us stability at the quarterback position and our scoring is really spread out.”

DiCiantis has 68 carries for 390 yards and five touchdowns. Sean Idowu has 18 carries for 163 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Tigers share the wealth as well. Seven players have between 15 and 18 tackles. Three linebackers — Mark Schultheis, Kevin Edwards and Chris Smith — have 18 tackles each.

“Everyone thinks the heart of our defense is (lineman) Pat Kugler because he’s got a scholarship to Michigan,” Walker said. “Jeremy Gonzales is actually the heart of our defensive front. He creates all kinds of havoc on the field.”

Gonzales has recovered two fumbles this season.

Walker said he has plenty of respect for Butler.

“My first-ever coaching job was under Clyde (Butler coach Conti) at Clarion-Limestone. I know what kind of coach that man is,” Walker said. “It’s his second year there and you can see the difference.

“Butler’s technique has really improved and they’re making few mistakes. They’re playing well, they’re playing hard and they’re playing at a much higher confidence level.”
