Mars girls volleyball sweeps away Knights
Abby Matusik had 11 kills and Mel Dinderman tallied 19 digs to lead Mars to a 26-24, 25-20, 25-11 victory over Knoch in girls volleyball action Tuesday.
Katie King added 26 assists for the Planets (7-1, 6-0), who play at Deer Lakes Thursday.
Celina Sanks had eight kills and 12 digs, Schaely Renfrew five kills and 10 digs and Kara Fitzpatrick 12 service points for Knoch (5-4, 4-2), which hosts Valley Thursday.
Freeport 3, Highlands 0 — Alexis Schrecengost and Lauren Frazetta each had 15 service points to power the Yellowjackets.
Ashley Sample added seven points and seven kills for Freeport (6-1), which hosts Quaker Valley today.
Karns City 3, Redbank Valley 0 — Heather Henry had seven kills and eight service points, Kendyll Smith 11 points, three kills and two blocks and Kristen Smith 14 assists and 10 points as the Gremlins blanked the Bulldogs 25-9, 25-23, 25-23.
Karns City (5-3) will play at North Clarion Thursday.
A-C Valley 3, Keystone 1 — Meredith Snyder had 12 kills, 13 assists, six blocks and nine digs to lead the Falcons to a 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 win.
Emily Quaill pitched in 10 kills, 15 assists and three blocks and Abby Wetzel had 14 digs for A-C Valley (6-1).
The Falcons also won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 18-25, 25-14. Katie Stumpner had eight service points in the JV victory.

Butler won the Steve Bryan Memorial Cup at the Belmont Complex in Kittanning recently. The Golden Tornado defeated Ford City, 7-1, in the finals.Butler also defeated Indiana 5-2, Moon 5-4 and Kittanning 5-4. Junior goaltender Logan Rothbauer stopped 55 of 61 shots in winning two games, while sophomore Clay Bachman stopped 55 of 60 shots in his two victories.Tanner Gilliland, Troy Double and Tony Harpel scored five goals each with Joseph DiMartino and Nick Whann adding two goals. Gilliland had five assists, Whann and Jake Campbell four each.
