SRU volleyball caps tourney with victory
Slippery Rock University's women's volleyball team capped off its appearance in the Shepherd University Tournament with a 3-1 triumph over Fairmont State on Saturday. The win came by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 14-25 and 25-22.
Seneca Valley High product Sarah Beals led The Rock (6-4) with nine kills. Junior setter Alexandra Fleagle totaled 17 assists and Janna Reilly contributed 15 assists and 11 digs.
Kara Mullins scored a first-half goal for The Rock (3-1, 1-1), but Kutztown tallied the final three scores in a 3-1 upset of SRU.Caitlin Binder assisted on Mullins' score and goalkeeper Dana O'Neill made one save in the loss.
Brandon Chiu and Josh Gray both scored a goal in the last 15 minutes of regulation to spark The Rock to a 2-2 tie with Urbana, keeping SRU unbeaten.Slippery Rock High School graduate Michael Ramirez contributed an assist to Chiu's goal.Clayton Master stopped five shots in net for The Rock (3-0-3).
Courtney Lee made eight saves, but SRU fell at Millersville 2-0. The Marauders entered the contest ranked No. 6 in the nation.
Mars High graduate Shane Kaclik rushed for a career-high 161 yards on 23 carries, but Grove City College fell to host Washington & Jefferson 24-17.Kaclik added a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first half that put the Wolverines up 10-7.GCC quarterback Brian Pell threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Anthony Ritchie that cut W&J's lead to 24-17 in the final period, but the Wolverines (1-2, 0-1) could pull no closer.
