Freeport rally pulls out 19-14 win
Damon Smith scored on a 1-yard plunge for the decisive points as the Freeport football team pulled out a 19-14 road win over Ford City Friday night.
The Yellowjackets trailed 14-13 before Smith's short scoring run.
Brendan Lynch started off the scoring for Freeport with a 22-yard run and later tossed a 13-yard pass to Dustin Koedel for a touchdown and a 13-7 lead.
Devin Willyard, though, gave Ford City (0-2) a lead on his own 1-yard TD run before the Yellowjackets rallied.
Freeport is now 2-0 on the season.
Grove City 19, Wilmington 7 — Sophomore quarterback Jared Graham rushed for 67 yards and also tossed a key 5-yard touchdown pass to Foster Reznor as the Eagles won a big Region 3 contest against the Greyhounds.
Graham was 4-of-7 passing for 56 yards.
Harold Price put the Eagles up 7-0 with a 2-yard TD run midway through the first quarter.
Grove City (2-0, 1-0) led 13-0 following a 2-yard scoring run by Reznor just three minutes later.
Wilmington (1-1, 0-1) responded with a 41-yard touchdown run by Tyler Donati to cut the lead to 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles' final score came on the TD pass from Graham to Reznor in the second quarter.
Grove City rushed for 227 yards on 55 carries.
Slippery Rock 42, Meadville 7 — Jeff Croll rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Ryan Currie added 139 yards on the ground for the Rockets.
Currie scored on a 90-yard run and tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Reeseman. Frank Conlon returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a Slippery Rock score.
Meadville did not dent the scoreboard until Slippery Rock was through scoring. Trevor Martin scored on a 1-yard run.
The Rockets are 2-0 on the season.
Union 21, Punxsutawney 6 — Kaden McGregor scored on a 72-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to break a 6-6 tie and led the Golden Knights to a big home win.
McGregor also scored on an 8-yard run and finished with 191 yards on 28 carries.
Cody Kline capped the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run.
Union (2-0) was also dominant on defense.
Brody Shick had three interceptions and Keenan Rankin also had a pick for the Golden Knights.
Summit Academy 8, Waynesburg 7 — Jamel King caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Chris Harp and then William Johnson ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Knights' this 1-point victory.
Waynesburg led 7-0 at halftime on a 35-yard TD run by Will Ziefel.
Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) 26, A-C Valley 13 — Kevin Kaufman rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown, but the Falcons could not overcome a 20-0 deficit in a loss in West Virginia.
Kaufman also threw a touchdown pass, hooking up with Justin Rothen for a 25-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Kaufman was 12-of-18 passing for 153 yards.
Clarion at Karns City, ppd — Friday's contest between the Gremlins and Bobcats was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
The game will be made up at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Butler 1, Kiski Area 0 — Freshman Haley Michel accounted for the game's lone goal in this Tornado win.
Spencer Posey and Matt White each scored goals to propel Mars to a 2-0 win over Gateway.Joe Kelly earned his second consecutive shutout in goal for the Planets.
Brett Rinker earned medalist honors with a three-under-par 68 Thursday as Slippery Rock placed fifth out of 30 teams at the Corry North Hills Tournament. It was the third straight year Rinker was medalist at the event.The Rockets scored a 318 as a team, 13 strokes behind champion Meadville. Slippery Rock's Bob Paczkowski was third overall with a 73. Matt Badger carded an 82, Levi Leonberg a 95.Slippery Rock faces Grove City and West Middlesex Monday at Oakview.
