Moniteau students accused of hazing

CHERRY TWP — Allegations of hazing among high school football players is being investigated by officials in the Moniteau School District.

“We had an incident of student-to-student hazing that was reported to administration,” said Superintendent George Svolos on Wednesday.

School district solicitor Andrea Parenti said the incident was reported Aug. 13 at a public board meeting “and an investigation began the next day.”

While Svolos would not confirm any information regarding specific actions of students due to confidentiality, he did say the school was conducting a thorough investigation.

“Moniteau does have an anti-hazing policy,” Svolos said. “Anyone found in violation of that policy will be disciplined.”

Svolos would not confirm any possible player suspensions from games. The Warriors open the 2012 football season Friday night at Sharpsville.

He also would not comment on how many players may have been involved in the alleged hazing incident.

“We are not at liberty to discuss student matters like that,” Svolos said. “The investigation is ongoing.”

There is no timetable for the conclusion of the investigation.

“I don’t imagine it will be much longer,” Parenti said. “We just want the investigation to be as thorough as possible.

“Hazing is a broad term and it is against the law in Pennsylvania. I suppose it is difficult to prove and kids are involved, so this investigation has to cover everything it can.”

Moniteau head varsity football coach Jeff Campbell said he knows little about the situation.

“It’s being handled by the school,” Campbell said. “My involvement in this is very minimal.

“We’re planning on going to Sharpsville Friday night to play a football game. That’s all I know.”

The school board had a closed executive session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The topic of the meeting was not discussed at Monday’s public board meeting.

“A problem was brought to our attention, and I think we tried to address it to the best of our ability,” said board member Joann Duke.

Board member Michael Panza directed calls about the incident to Svolos and to board president Dr. Douglas Kimmey.

Phone calls to other school board members were not returned Wednesday.

Eagle sports editor John Enrietto and staff writer Pamela McCarrier contributed to this report.
